A Singapore-based publication and a national science body recently cited two experts based at the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) for their significant contributions to agricultural science.

Dr. Roel R. Suralta was listed in the 2023 edition of the Asian Scientist 100 of the Asian Scientist Magazine following his winning in the 2021 National Research Council of the Philippines. The council recognized his works in root science resulting in producing high-value crops amidst climate change.

To be featured in the Asian Scientist 100 list, honorees must have received a national or international prize in the preceding year and have made significant scientific discoveries or provided leadership in academia or industry.

Suralta, a Career Scientist III, has also been honored with the title of Academician by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) in the Philippines, the highest recognition and scientific advisory body under the Department of Science and Technology.

NAST also acknowledged Dr. Nonawin L. Agustin, a Balik Scientist Fellow, as one of the 2023 Outstanding Young Scientists.

Her collaborative research with Nagoya University in Japan led to the discovery of the wavy root elongation growth 1 (weg1) gene, which could aid rice in coping with drought, particularly in rainfed lowlands where water is scarce.

“This breakthrough offers promising avenues for improving growth and productivity in abiotic-stressed environments, addressing a significant challenge in rice cultivation,” she said.

The scientists are expected to share their expertise and experience in engagements spearheaded by NAST.
