The Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) Program has improved farmers’ access to information by making educational materials available in agri-supply stores.

Pilot tested in Nueva Ecija, brochures on proper land preparation, recommended seeding rate for transplanting (40kg/ha) and direct-seeding (60-80kg/ha), right nutrient management, and good pest management were distributed in agri-stores in Science City of Muñoz and Guimba.

Store owners expressed pride in their role as intermediaries in disseminating information to the farmers.

“We are pleased to partner with RCEF in distributing these informative materials. This way, we can help farmers increase their income and reduce their expenses on farming. These materials can also serve as a guide for farmers to make informed decisions about the right fertilizers they will purchase in our store,” said Dexter Geronimo, owner of MG Farm Supply.

Meanwhile, Blesilda Bartolome, owner of Arvet’s Poultry Supply, appreciated the initiative as it fosters a sense of social responsibility within their enterprise. “Now, we’re not just here to sell agricultural products. We are part of the advocacy of helping the country become rice self-sufficient,” she said.

The RCEF Rice Extension Services Program, which funded the production of the information materials, is a component of Republic Act 11203 or Rice Tariffication Law. Sponsored by Sen. Cynthia Villar, the program is a six-year government initiative to help the farmers compete in the international rice market. The local government units and lawmakers assist in its implementation.
