Rice To The Next Level

The UN launched the first Food Systems Summit as a call for a global transformation in food systems. World leaders deem the current food systems as unresponsive to overcoming hunger, unhealthy, and destructive to the environment. Amidst these challenges, transformations are currently edging on the fields with diverse crops, cultivated in a safe fashion and sold in a fair market by farmers who were organized and supported through government interventions.
As in digital transformation, it may also be said that the only wrong move in food system transformation is not to make any move at all.

Modernong Teknolohiyang Pangmagsasaka

Hangad ng DA-PhilRice ang maginhawang paggamit ng mga teknolohiyang nagpapataas-ani at kita para sa mga magsasaka. Kaya naman maging digital farming ay inilalako na rin.
Sa ating mga magsasaka, subukan ang mga digital applications tulad ng Rice Crop Manager o Leaf Color Computing. Pwede na rin gamitin ang Facebook, Youtube, online training , o text center sa pagkuha ng impormasyon.

The dawning of Agri 4.0 brings both challenges and opportunities in equal measure. With inclusive technologies that transcend generations, our farmers will have to brave the new world of smart/digital farming with an open mind for transformative change.

This issue chronicles the journey of our rice science from its programmatic implementations to the ushering in of the New Thinking including Agriculture 4.0. The build-up toward PhilRice@35 (and after) is encapsulated in 3 Ks: kaalaman (knowledge), kakayahan (capacity), and kaunlaran (prosperity). It also articulates how PhilRice continually works on innovations to help the rice farmers achieve the life they deserve from their hard work and toil.

PAGKAIN—pangunahing pangangailangan ng tao. Kaya naman, may sakuna o pandemya mang kinakaharap ay tuloy pa rin ang ating mga pursigidong magsasaka. Alamin ang mga diskarte at makabagong kaalaman sa pagsasaka maging ang mga suportang handog ng Kagawaran ng Agrikultura, partikular na ang PhilRice. Tuloy ang buhay-saka, lakipan lamang ng ibayong pag-iingat.

Crisis-resilient Rice Farming

Filipino rice farmers have been going through many challenges to produce the country’s main staple – rice. We have the changing climate and the need to adapt and mitigate as agriculture is one of its biggest victims; loss of arable lands; economic pressures such as trade liberalization and increased competition; and now the need to be food-sufficient as we battle against an invisible enemy – COVID-19. This issue of the PhilRice magazine highlights stories of resilience through these challenges as we move toward our vision “Rice-Secure Philippines.”
