The key to rice security is ensuring that seeds are of high quality. In 2017, the Philippines achieved its highest rice production thus far. The use of quality seeds is one of the factors that made this possible. This issue features strategies that PhilRice and its partners are pursuing to make quality seeds available, accessible, and affordable to all Filipino rice farmers at all times to help them produce even more.

Machines are farmer’s allies. With machines, farmers could
produce and earn more in a breeze helping them to confidently
compete with rice-exporting neighboring countries. It is hoped that
machines would become part of Filipino’s farming culture.

Rice, youth, and climate change
Intersections among rice, youth, and climate change are
not always talked about. The cover shows that these three
can be interrelated, with young people at the center. We
show that young people are forces to be reckoned with
when it comes to addressing issues relating to the impacts
of climate change on rice and/or vice versa. Engaging
them can mean favorable impacts on our rice-farming
communities.
