The library of  Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) has been recognized as one of the champion partners of the Department of Science and Technology’s Science and Technology Information Institute’s STARBOOKS project.

The award was presented at a ceremony marking the 12th year of STARBOOKS, themed, “Pagbibigay Pugay sa mga Bida ng STARBOOKS!”

Over the past year, the PhilRice Library has consistently contributed a wealth of science-based information resources to the digital library. These contributions, which include journals, magazines, policy briefs, and e-newsletters, have been provided free of charge.

STARBOOKS or the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated KioskS project offers Filipinos, particularly students in remote areas, access to digitized science and technology information through specially-designed ‘pods’ with an easy user interface. The project has seen significant success, with the number of units across the country growing from 1,000 to 6,788 over the past 7 years.

This is not the first time the PhilRice Library has been recognized for its contributions to STARBOOKS. Since 2020, the library has been steadfastly contributing its unique and essential collection of rice-related publications to the science database, earning several appreciation awards for its exemplary commitment.

Librarian Irish D. Bulaon emphasized the importance of the partnership in strengthening their network as an information-source body.

Virginia P. Salvador, head librarian, expressed gratitude for the award, noting it as a gratifying acknowledgment of their work to make rice-related literature widely available and their efforts towards digitization.
