The Department of Agriculture (DA) is intensifying efforts to achieve the country’s 20.46 million metric tons (MMT) rice production target for 2025, aligning the National Rice Program (NRP) with the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) Seed Program to improve seed distribution and optimize yield.
During a planning workshop at DA-Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), key stakeholders reviewed strategies to enhance seed allocation, synchronize distribution schedules, and address production bottlenecks.
“We need to identify and resolve issues that may hinder production. A more integrated approach—leveraging resources, expertise, and partnerships—is critical to strengthening our rice sector,” said Engr. Christopher V. Morales, undersecretary for rice industry development.
Morales stressed the importance of targeting high-yielding areas and ensuring timely seed distribution to optimize productivity while minimizing costs. He also urged program implementers to develop climate-resilient strategies in anticipation of El Niño, La Niña, and typhoons, ensuring that farmers receive consistent support.
The Philippines produced 19.09 MMT of palay in 2023, and Morales reaffirmed DA’s commitment to hitting the 20.46 MMT goal through improved seed distribution and enhanced productivity measures.
The three-day workshop focused on refining seed allocation and synchronizing delivery schedules for inbred and hybrid seeds, ensuring efficient distribution for dry and wet cropping seasons.
