PhilRice Bicol – Hundreds of youth for agri. Almost a thousand students were introduced to the prospects in agriculture in an information caravan for youth held in Legazpi City, Albay, March 7. With the theme, “Kabataan sa Agrikultura, Para sa Bayang Masagana,” it aimed to create youth awareness on new farming technologies and government agricultural programs, and encourage them youth to pursue careers in agriculture. PhilRice in Ligao City, Albay and the Regional Field Unit of the Department of Agriculture in Region V conducted the caravan.
PhilRice Isabela – Women-farmers revered. Highschool students in San Mateo, Isabela honored the women farmers this this Women’s Month through arts. The young artists portrayed the role of women in rice farming such as land preparation, transplanting, and harvesting. Artworks were exhibited in the town’s municipal hall.
PhilRice Batac – RICEponsible kids. School children from Tabug Elementary School in Batac City, Ilocos Norte pledge not to waste rice after participating in a mobile Rice Science Museum exhibit, March 5. Conducted by PhilRice Batac in celebration of its 20th founding anniversary, the exhibit showcased the traditional and modern ways of growing rice. The children also expressed the importance of rice in the Filipino culture through posters.
PhilRice Los Baños – Enhancing women’s equity. To increase awareness on gender sensitivity, PhilRice Los Baños held a seminar titled, “Breaking the Bonds of Sexism: Gender Sensitivity and Its Application to PhilRice.” Resource speakers from the University of the Philippine’s Gender Center in Los Baños discussed gender sensitivity and mainstreaming, and avoiding sexual harassment and violence against women in the workplace. PhilRice Los Baños also joined for the town’s 1st Inter-Agency and 5th Inter-Juana Volleyball League Competition.
PhilRice Los Baños – Curious kids. Pupils in Laguna learn about rice varieties in a recent science and math school. Exhibited by PhilRice in Los Baños, displays made the children aware that rice has different colors and forms, including red and black rice, and brown rice. PhilRice studies show that frequent consumption of these rice may help fight cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes.
PhilRice Midsayap – Technology testing. Farmers and extensionists in Brgy. Malayan, M’lang, Cotabato evaluate the technologies developed and promoted by PhilRice..Technologies include Rice Integrated Crop Management and its complementary technologies such as drumseeding. PhilRice in Bual Norte, Midsayap facilitated the testing during the village’s Farmers’ Field Day and Forum, March 1.
PhilRice Midsayap – More productive years. PhilRice Midsayap Experiment Station opens its 31st founding anniversary by boosting camaraderie and gender sensitivity among its staff, March 11. Extension activities for farmers and outreach programs for elementary schools will be implemented as the station approaches its anniversary celebration on July 8-12.
