National agencies and local governments are intensifying efforts to improve rice productivity and farmer income through season-long, science-based training.
In Ligao City, 30 farmers from multiple barangays began a Farmer Field School led by the Department of Agriculture–Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), National Irrigation Administration (NIA), and the city government. The school promotes the PalayCheck System—a set of best practices covering seeds, land prep, crop establishment, nutrients, water, pests, and postharvest handling.
From April 2 to July 25, 2025, farmers will also learn about diversified farming to increase income and reduce risks from climate and market shocks.
“This is exactly what farmers need. We’re learning practices many of us weren’t familiar with—and we’ll share these with others,” participant Aldrin M. De Vergara said.
NIA Acting IMO Engr. Mark Cloyd G. So affirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting the initiative.
