NSIC Rc 222 continues to be the preferred inbred rice variety among farmers in Cagayan and Isabela, citing its high yield potential, resilience, and consistent performance across seasons.

In Iguig, Cagayan, Richmon D. Lorenzo harvested 9.5t/ha from his 1-ha farm during the 2024 wet season, nearly doubling his previous yield.

“Farming is challenging, but I made it because of Rc 222,” said Lorenzo, who was recognized as one of his municipality’s top yielders.

The variety was also the top choice during the recent Lakbay Palay varietal demonstration in Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) in San Mateo, Isabela, receiving 73% of participant votes in a participatory selection.

In Mallig, Isabela, Domingo V. Balagan reported an average of 7.5t/ha across 5ha in the 2025 dry season, peaking at 8.3t/ha.

“I’ve had my highest inbred yield with Rc 222. It remains my choice for the 2025 wet season,” said Balagan, who plans to plant it on his 10ha.

NSIC Rc 222, developed by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in 2009, is known for its yield potential of up to 10t/ha and intermediate resistance to major rice diseases and pests. PhilRice maintains the seed’s purity and distributes certified seeds through the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) Seed Program.

Lorenzo and Balagan are beneficiaries of the RCEF program and expressed appreciation for the certified seeds they received.
