Nutrition experts from the Rice Chemistry and Food Science Division of the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rice Research Institute (DA-PhilRice) reaffirmed that rice remains central to the Filipino diet, providing energy and essential nutrients for daily activities.
“When consumed in proper portions and paired with vegetables, fish, and other nutrient-rich foods, rice sustains energy and supports overall health,” said Dr. Riza Abilgos-Ramos, registered nutritionist-dietitian and career scientist.
The expert explained that carbohydrates, particularly those from rice, serve as the body’s primary fuel, supporting brain, heart, and muscle function. They warned that completely avoiding rice may lead to low energy levels and reduced physical performance.
As more health-conscious individuals restrict rice intake, Abilgos-Ramos clarified that elimination is unnecessary. Instead, they recommend portion control, dietary balance, and variety.
“By practicing portion control and maintaining dietary diversity, Filipinos can continue to enjoy rice as part of a nutritious, sustainable, and culturally relevant diet while supporting a healthy and active lifestyle,” she added.
Brown rice and unpolished pigmented rice varieties, such as red and black rice, are encouraged for their fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that help reduce the risk of chronic lifestyle diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.
Other local carbohydrate sources, including bananas (saba), sweet potatoes, and other root crops, may complement rice in a balanced diet, while refined and ultra-processed foods should be limited.
Nutrition professionals also advised consulting licensed nutritionist-dietitians as dietary needs vary depending on health conditions and activity levels.
