A Philippine-developed satellite system that helps the government make evidence-based decisions for rice production has earned international recognition from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The Philippine Rice Information System (PRiSM), developed by the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) with partner agencies, was recognized for its role in transforming crop monitoring and management through the use of space and digital technologies.

Sustainable plant production and protection were among six categories recognized. Out of nearly 300 nominations worldwide, PhilRice was one of the 39 institutions honored for their innovative contributions to transforming cropping systems over the past four decades. The award was conferred during the FAO Global Technical Recognition Ceremony last October 15 as part of the 2025 World Food Forum, which also marked the 80th anniversary of FAO.

The first satellite-based rice monitoring system in Southeast Asia was developed in collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute, DA-National Rice Program, DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research, DA Regional Offices, sarmap SA, and Local Government Units.

PRiSM integrates satellite data, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), crop modeling technologies, and ICT tools to monitor rice areas and provide data on yield estimates, production losses due to floods or drought, pest and disease occurrences, and rice varieties planted.

PRiSM has become a vital tool for policymakers and agriculturists, particularly in assessing the synchronization of production activities with actual planting situations and projecting monthly supply outlooks. The system’s real-time data on rice growth stages also support proposals for funding interventions to offset potential declines in palay production.

“The entities recognized are helping farmers to produce more with less, which is essential to meeting the needs of today and of generations to come,” said Yurdi Yasmi, director of FAO’s Plant Production and Protection Division.

The FAO’s Global Technical Recognition spanned five domains of sustainable plant production and protection: management of crop germplasm, development and adoption of improved crop varieties, advancements in agronomic practices, plant health management, and technology transformation and promotion.

“This event not only celebrates scientific and technological excellence, but it also aims to raise awareness on successful models and practices that can be replicated for greater global impact,” explained Chikelu Mba, deputy director of the FAO Plant Production and Protection Division.

PhilRice Executive Director Dr. John C. de Leon expressed his gratitude for the recognition, sharing the honor with IRRI, DA and its Regional Field Offices, and the National Rice Program for their unwavering collaboration and support.

“The remarkable growth and maturity of PRiSM within the Philippine NARS demonstrates a commitment that goes beyond mere data and technology. Its widespread application now provides effective support for transforming our rice and rice-based food systems, leading to sustainable resources and resilient agricultural practices. Para sa Masaganang Bagong Pilipinas! Mabuhay!” he said.
