A group of indigenous peoples in Occidental Mindoro will benefit from the Farmers` Field Day recently conducted by the local government of the province and Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice).
Comprising 30 percent of the total population of the province, the more than 150 Mangyan farmers came from Ulanguan, Banganay, and Sili.
The field day highlighted the varietal trial of eight different rice varieties, both modern and traditional, including a demonstration of vegetable intercropping, which the project-partners established since February. The project will continue until December next year.
The project, funded by the Regional Field Office of MIMAROPA, also includes a capacity enhancement component to orient the farmers with new technologies, particularly in cultivating vegetables and other high value crops.
Meanwhile, Gov. Gene Mendiola assured that the communities will receive, among others, livestock, irrigation support system, water pump, and solar dryer.
