An international award-giving body has recognized the Department of Agriculture- Philippine Rice Research Institute (DA-PhilRice) Magazine as the 2022 Best Free Food Publications.

Hallbars Sustainability Research Institute cited the quarterly-published knowledge product for featuring healthy rice and rice-based recipes that are easy to prepare and cook.

In its recent issue, DA-PhilRice Magazine published rice nougat and brownies as snack and dessert ideas. It has also featured bibingka made of black rice and rice pudding brûlée, which are often prepared on special occasions.

Other than the food section, the magazine also highlights farmers’ success stories and the lives of researchers and development workers.

With the theme, “For the love of country, farmers, and rice,” the magazine shared the “stories that might have been unnoticed but have brought change to the lives of farmers and communities.”

Stories include the experiences of the researchers and development workers in extending services to the rice farmers even in remote areas amidst insurgencies, travel ordeals, and limited resources.

As the first PhilRice Director, Dr. Santiago R. Obien said, “[PhilRice] is not here because it’s an easy life. We’re here to make lives easy.”

In June this year, the Institute was also hailed as the Outstanding Institution for Science Journalism in the Paragala Awards by the Holy Angel University (HAU) Communicators League.
