Africans learn quality seed

About 20 participants from the world’s second largest and second most-populous continent met the experts at Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) to know about quality seed production, June 1. Originating from Burkina, Cote d” Ivore, Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Togo, they are trainees of the Quality Breeder and Foundation Seed course of International Rice Research Institute. They toured around PhilRice laboratories and seed marketing area in Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija. PhilRice promotes the use of quality seed as it can boost farmers’ harvest by 5-10% and it has a germination rate of at least 85%.

Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) is a government corporate entity attached to the Department of Agriculture created through Executive Order 1061 on 5 November 1985 (as amended) to help develop high-yielding and cost-reducing technologies so farmers can produce enough rice for all Filipinos.
