Farmers in Cagayan Valley has more options to reach PhilRice through its Madiskarteng Pagsasaka radio program aired over seven stations in the region.

Conceptualized in 2014, the radio program assists rice farmers by airing topics on the latest in rice farming. Its weekly airings revolve around the PalayCheck, a dynamic rice crop management system that packages key strategies and technologies farmers must observe to obtain optimum yield, and PalaYamanan, an integrated rice-based system that aims to augment rice farmers’ income by adding other enterprises in the farm like vermicomposting and mushroom production.

Subtopics under the two main contents of the program include integrated pest management, integrated nutrient management, reduced tillage technology, alternate wetting and drying, and use of information and communications technology in rice farming. Mungbean and other backyard vegetable production are also included in the lineup of topics.

Pete Campo, a farmer and an avid radio program listener from Alcala, Cagayan, said that he is learning plenty of management technologies through the radio program. Presently, he is into mushroom and vermicompost production, which he learned from the radio program.

Andres Dela Cruz, Jr., PhilRice Isabela research and development coordinator said a tracer study will soon be conducted to gauge the impact of the radio program to farmers.
