A-8Ten Muslim farmers from Butig, Lanao del Sur participated in a three-day training program titled Technology updating on hybrid rice production at PhilRice, February 28-March 2.

The hybrid rice varieties, mechanical transplanter, integrated pest management, and best farming practices were introduced to the farmer-participants. They also visited the FutureRice farm and seed processing facility of the Institute.

“PhilRice experts taught us about the high-yielding varieties such as hybrid rice and the use of modern rice technologies,” said, Ibrahim Mama, one of the participants.

“When we go back to our place, we will share the different strategies on rice production to our fellow farmers for us to gain higher yield,” he added.

DA Secretary Emmanuel “Manny” Piñol, on his Facebook post, wrote that the training is part of the interventions he committed after his official visit in the town with his Biyaheng Bukid team, February 9.

Piñol aims to help address poverty in the province, which has the highest poverty incidence in the country at 74.3%.
