This sums up the thoughts of five Brunei educators who recently underwent a week-long Rice Appreciation and Study Tour in the Philippines coordinated by DA-PhilRice.
Led by Principal Aket Bin Melayong of the Wasan Vocational School of Brunei Darussalam’s Ministry of Education, the mentors learned DA-PhilRice technologies that help Filipino farmers increase their yield and income. The four other delegates were instructors – Ruby Guiam Chih Hui, Hamadah binti Dr Hj Muhd Nur Lubis bin Haji, Mohaidi bin Haji Matusin, and Dayang Vivian Meman, head of the school’s agriculture department. Meman who hails from the Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija, is married to a Brunei agricultural engineer graduate of the Central Luzon State University (CLSU), Nueva Ecija.
“Our school teaches young Bruneians the skills to produce rice and other food crops for our people. Brunei’s rice supply is mostly imported as we only produce 3 percent of our rice requirement. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah endeavors that we become food-secure by educating our youth today. We hope this results in a 20 percent rice-self-sufficient Brunei by 2015,” Aket said.
“Last season, PhilRice showed us nearly 5 t/ha harvest in Brunei’s soils using Philippine rice variety NSIC Rc138. Yield average in Brunei is less than a ton per hectare. Hence, we came to the Philippines to learn more rice technologies from DA-PhilRice for the benefit of our students and our country,” Meman said.
Their tour was under the auspices of the new bilateral agriculture cooperation between the Philippines’ Department of Agriculture and Brunei’s Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources. The group was also grateful to their Ministry of Education for the opportunity to appreciate rice and other agriculture activities in the Philippines.
Aside from DA-PhilRice, the Brunei educators also visited the International Rice Research Institute, University of the Philippines Los Baños, Philippine Carabao Center, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, and CLSU among other research and development institutions based in the science communities of Los Baños, Laguna and Muñoz, Nueva Ecija.
Brunei Ambassador to the Philippines Malai Halimah Yussof also met the touring educators while she formally opened the DA-PhilRice-organized Experience Rice Exhibit on November 23 in observance of the national rice awareness month. | Average user rating | There are no user reviews for this item
