Can organic fertilizers guarantee decent rice yield?
Science-based knowledge and information that answer these questions are espoused in the book: “Facts and Myths about Organic Fertilizers”. The book discloses shared interest, merged knowledge, and experiences in soils, nutrients, and fertilizers of the authors – Dr. Cezar Mamaril, Ms. Michelle Castillo, and Dr. Leocadio Sebastian.
The book was launched at the PhilRice-sponsored Annual Rice Forum with the theme: Revisiting the Organic Fertilizer Issue in Rice. Led by the Asia Rice Foundation, the Forum was held on 26 November 2009 in Los Baños, Laguna in observance of National Rice Awareness Month. Dr. Mamaril, lead author and soil scientist, said the increasing demand for food creates tremendous burden on soil and water resources. We have to sustain the soil’s productivity as nutrients are robbed by plants for growth, he added. Likewise, the book clarifies some misconceptions, elucidates on facts, and dispels myths about inorganic and organic fertilizers. Through this 140-page book, we share information we have distilled through time. We hope such shared knowledge on fertilizers, soil, nutrients, and their synergy will help maintain and sustain the productive capacity of soils, and protect the environment for generations to come, said Mamaril. In the foreword, PhilRice Executive Director Ronilo Beronio lauds the book as a product of scientific minds who have toiled hard with our changing soilscape. People need not be dogmatic in using only one kind of fertilizer, Beronio said. We should further distill the authors’ conclusion that proper combinations of organic and inorganic fertilizers have synergistic effects, which could improve plant growth and further improve the soils, he added.
