Farmers and students will be presented with technologies addressing climate change in a field day to be held at the PhilRice Central Experiment Station, Maligaya, Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija, March 10 and 11.
According to Celia Abadilla, PhilRice’s Technology Management and Services Division head and field day chair, the activity will highlight recommended varieties under stress-prone environments.
“Varieties for flooded and drought-prone areas will be of interest to the farmers and informative to students as they help the rice tillers adapt to climate change,” she said.
Meanwhile, Nathaniel Cruz, bureau chief and officer-in-charge of the Operations and Services Division of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration and Dr. Josie Valdez, Bulacan Agricultural State College president will be the event’s speakers.
More than 1500 farmers, extensionists, students, and teachers from Central Luzon, Pangasinan, Laguna, and nearby provinces of Nueva Ecija are expected to participate.
Aside from a field tour featuring PhilRice technologies, an open forum will also be conducted, in which participants can directly consult the rice experts.
Exhibit booths displaying rice-based food products; pest, water, and nutrient management techniques; publications; and Open Academy for Philippine Agriculture kiosk will also be showcased to the participants.
Field demonstrations on farm machineries and PhilRice Museum tour will also be activity components.
The field day is part of the 25th celebration of PhilRice Anniversary with a theme, “Addressing Climate Change thru Rice Science.” The activity is implemented twice a year to inform stakeholders on the Institute’s developed and ongoing rice technologies.
