 The Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) released its general recommendations on the management of cutworms and armyworms following reports on the defoliators’ attacks in some parts of the country including Bataan. Arriving from his recent trip in the said province where attacks on rice plants were reported, Genaro S. Rillon, head of PhilRice's Crop Protection Division, said infestations in Bataan is “now under control except in Hermosa, where farmers apply insecticides to the larvae.” Local units of the Department of Agriculture identified Bagac, Mariveles, Pilar, and Limay as towns hit by the the insect pests. |

Close to a thousand tertiary and high school students in the country’s’ rice granary made commitments to conserve rice, supporting the Save Rice, Save Lives movement of PhilRice, during the weRice forum conducted at the Central Luzon University (CLSU) in Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija, Aug. 19. weRice forum for students is one of the activities celebrating the National Rice Awareness Month, which coincides with PhilRice’s 25th anniversary in November. |

PhilRice Agusan made a clean sweep of all the major awards in the 11th Regional Symposium on the Research and Development Highlights of the Caraga Consortium for Agriculture, Forestry and Resources Research and Development held at Surigao del Sur State University in Tandag City, Aug. 10-11.
In the research category, the study, Nutrient levels in relation to incidence and severity of major rice pests and natural enemies, bagged the best paper award. Authored by entomologists Alejandra Estoy, Belen Tabudlong, Dr. Gerardo Estoy Jr. and soil expert Frenciso Varquez, the study showed that applying nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sulfur, and zinc in NSIC Rc128 does not affect natural enemy populations. |
